La théorie des catastrophes a été élaborée dans la fin des années 1960 par René Thom, mais son livre "Stabilité structurelle et morphogenèse" n'a été publié qu'en 1972 (W. A. Benjamin Inc. New York. Une deuxième édition française a parue chez Interéditions, Paris en 1977.) Une traduction en Anglais par David Fowler a été disponible à partir de 1975. (Thom R. - Structural stability and morphogenesis. Benjamin Addison Wesley, New York, 1975.)

Les idées de Thom ont été développée par E.C. Zeeman qui a proposé de nombreuses applications dans plusieurs domaines. (voir son livre Zeeman E. C. - Catastrophe theory, selected papers. Addison-Wesley publishing compagny, London, 1977.)
